National Derny Championships for Dani King
This weekend is the National Derny Championships, which is being held in Scunthorpe. Dani King, Horizon Fitness Racing Team, is the defending champion having won last year in Newport.
"These championships have been a target for me this season. It's always good to go after a National Title, and it's never good to lose one. So I really wanted to focus on them. I've been over to Belgium and Holland racing in the past couple of weeks", Dani said.
"I've been staying at the Horizon Fitness team house and managed to get in some quality training. The racing is also really good out there of course. I did 4 races and got 4 top 10s. The highlight was my win. That felt great."
"After this I'm going back to Belgium for two more races (with Annie Simpson, Hannah Rich and Helen Wyman). These races are really just prep for the Horizon Fitness Women's GP on 17th June. I really hope to go well there. It's important for us, and it's important for women's cycling. The more quality events we get in the UK, the better. This race will have TV coverage on ITV4, so that's an extra incentive to be on the front."
Team Manager Stef Wyman said, "We're really happy with what Dani has achieved this season. There is no pressure on her, and she's in control of her program. If she can defend the Derny Champs, we're going to be really happy. The win in Belgium was fantastic, but so was her ride in the Ronde het Ronostrand last weekend. She finished 8th in a field of true quality. It's a classic style race over 130kms. You can't hide in Dutch racing, and that result showed real class."
Dani's races over the coming weeks also include the Tour of Limousin, which will be the first professional race for the Horizon Fitness Racing Team. Based in the centre of France, it's a tough 4-day race with a 17.5km individual TT on day 2. It should be a great chance for the team to race against some strong European teams and see where they stand.
