What is your background in cycling?

I spent my youth racing and training at Maindy Track. It was a good base, with lots of children my age, so I made close friendships. When I reached the U12 category, I started training with a group, and we all became very close; travelling to races together, and training together. It was really good fun, and I've got lots of memories from our trips away.

How long have you been involved in the sport, and what was your first event?

I've been riding my bike for 11 years. My first race was the Newport Phoenix Crit around Newport Industrial Park when I was 8. I remember getting my first road bike (a Peugeot) in the morning, my dad set the saddle height at a guess, and I got straight on and raced.

What would you like to achieve in the next 5 years?

I want to do well for Team Wales at the Commonwealth Games, and come away with a medal in the track events.

What are your strongest points?

My bike handling skills are quite good, and I think I can read a race quite well; when the important moves are coming etc.

What would you say is your most prized cycling possession?

My first European Gold medal.

What would you class as your best ride, or position to date, and why?

Last year when I got 3rd in a UCI race, I stood on the podium with Kirstin Wild and Marianne Vos, who are two of the best women cyclists in the world. It was a really unexpected result, and afterwards I was so happy it made me realise I can make it as a professional.

Who is your favourite sports person, and why?

Sally Hodge - she was world points race champion in 1988. I think you can get more inspiration from someone you know who is from the same area, and grew up racing and training with the same club (Cardiff Ajax).

Have you got any advice for any young people thinking of getting involved in cycling?

Make sure you enjoy it and have fun. Do it for yourself, not anybody else.

How do you relax after a race?

Lots of ways: read a book, watch a film, generally chat with my friends. I like to completely switch off from cycling when I'm not on a bike.

Tell us how it feels to be chosen to represent Wales at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi this year?

I was so happy and proud to find out I was going to the Games. I was really unsure if I was going to get selected, having such a late start to my season, but I am looking forward to it definitely. I am really proud to represent my country.
