Back in the swing of things

By Dani King - Horizon Fitness Racing Team

I’ve just completed 2 races after having Glandular Fever; the first was the Welsh Crit champs which were held in a little town called Cardigan. I was really looking forward to the race, but also apprehensive as to how I was going to feel. I made sure I did a good warm up as from previous experience I know crits can start fast. I was right, it went straight from the gun and I found myself hanging on.

I stayed with the front group for about 20mins, and then found myself in no-man’s-land for another 10. Eventually, a group caught me which Ruby Miller was in; we were the leading women in the race. The pace stayed high, however I knew the 1st woman result was going to be a sprint between me and Ruby. I waited until quite late as I knew the finish was a deceiving drag, however Ruby had the better of me on the day and beat me in what was a photo finish.

I was really pleased with the race overall, as I was expecting to really struggle after having 6 weeks off my bike. The next race I rode was the Welsh Open Track champs, which I rode in preparation for the National Track Champs which start in a week’s time. I used it as a tester to see if my body is going to be ready for such hard racing.

The first event was a 2k pursuit which I was excited about as I hadn’t ridden one since I was a junior. I rode it consistently and ended up with a 4 second pb, with a time of 2.30.3. I was chuffed with the time as I really wasn’t expecting to go quick. (The TP camp with the team must have paid off). I was 1st girl. The next event was the scratch; the women had to ride with the men as only 3 women rode; me, Hannah Rich, and Ella Hopkins. I ended up in a group off the front for about 20 laps, unfortunately, the group got brought back. I was 1st girl again after a gruelling race.

My body wasn’t used to all this racing so I was nailed before the points race even started. Jon Mould who rides for 100% me was in the race so I knew it was going to be hard. I ended up getting points and coming 1st girl again so overall I was really pleased with the day's racing and I can’t wait for the nationals!
