Off-road all the way for Gabby Day

By Gabby Day - Horizon Fitness Racing Team

Last weekend I rode the latest series of the Gorrick Mountain Bike Series. The venue was Frith Hill, very close to Deepcut in Surrey. It was a great venue; in the woods with about 70% single track, which was great as it means I get to practice my technique. There were also a few short, sharp climbs which were good for me.

My race started later in the afternoon. Rick's race was earlier in the day so I sat in the feed zone for him and handed bottles up. After his race, we went round the course together. It is really good to have Rick to take me round, and it is always helpful that he has already raced so can show me the good lines and help with any more technical areas.

It was a very hot race for me, but it was rather nice when it started raining lightly on the start line; it felt very refreshing. I raced in a Horizon skinsuit for this race, just to see how it felt, and what I prefer for the next race I do.

The race got off to a fast start, and I wasn't the quickest off the line; I did the first half of the lap in second position, and waited until the first climb to pass. I made an effort and dropped the rider I had been with. From then on, I maintained my lead and pulled more time out nearer the end of the race. It was a fast, tough race, but I enjoyed it and was pleased with my performance.

I have not got a race this weekend, so I have been able to get a good hard week's training in. I have done some good speed work sessions with the guys. I did my local criterium on Tuesday night; Wednesday I raced the Lincs TLI road race, and Thursday I did a group chain gang session.

So, all good work for me! I have been going to Fitness Pilates every week as well, which is really good core work, and great for stretching and strengthening the body. I certainly had a good abs workout session this week. And to top it all off, Lincoln has had beautiful hot sunshine weather, so I have been able to ride in shorts and short sleeved jersey.

My next race is the third round of the Mountain Bike National Points Series in Margham Park, Wales on the 29th May.
