Coffee rides and a trip north

By Penny Rowson - Horizon Fitness Racing Team

For a change, I headed up north last weekend to do the women's CDNW race at Clitheroe. There was a men's race on just before us, and their course was lovely; very hilly, and the sun was shining. Come our race, and they managed to find a pan flat course and made us go round it 12 times, just as the sun had gone back in.

However, the atmosphere before the race was great; dead relaxed and friendly. I chatted to some of the other girls, and they all gave positive feedback on last week's race at Bedford, where the Rapha Condor and Max Gear ladies were prepared to follow Horizon's example and improve women's racing in Britain.

So to say the course was pretty boring, I really enjoyed the race. Average speed was fast, and the bunch kept safe. Throughout, I tried to keep the presence of the Horizon colours near the front. I also made a few digs towards the start with the other riders, but nothing stuck, so sat in waiting for the bunch gallop.

Positioning was key, so I came round the last bend in 3rd wheel. However, the line was deceivingly further than I thought, and I ended up getting rolled by about 10 people. Then again, I'm dead pleased with how I rode the race and just needed to improve on my bunch sprint.

It's the Hillingdon crit race on Sunday, but as it's a fair way to travel, and I did my U12 nationals there, I won't be racing. A weekend of cafe rides is good enough for me. I'm sure the team will do great, and keep a positive light on women's racing.
