Racing, Training, and Le Tour de France

By Alex Greenfield - Horizon Fitness Racing Team

I arrived Thursday in Belgium at my team house for my first European race of the season. It will be the real kick off of my season.

Me, Simon, Helen and Britt were in the race and we worked really good together. Annie cracked a big attack in on lap one, but unfortunately, it didn't stick. Then after 2 more laps, the ground was starting to split, with a group of 10 starting to go away. I was a bit far back and missed the initial move, so attacked across to it and Helen jumped on my wheel. It ended up as a group of 12 of us and we stayed away for the rest of the race. I felt pretty strong in the break; 60kms of chaingang, so it paid off getting out on the local chaingang in Cardiff - thanks guys!

On the last lap, I just followed at the back and tried to get myself in a good place for the sprint, but messed it up a bit. When I went to kick, it just didn't happen. I think I need to get some more racing in my legs before I will get my fast sprint back at the end of a race, but I'm pleased with my result - 10th in the first kermesse.

With the race done, the next day a group of us went into Brussels to watch the Tour, which was pretty cool; good weather, good atmosphere, so can't ask for much more really! Then on Monday, we all took a road trip down to Spa for a hilly training ride in the Ardennes. I got an absolute kicking on all the climbs, but loved the ride and the good banter all round. Saw the Tour again (twice) and may have even got a bit of TV time!

The first few days in Belgium have been fun, and getting out on the bike in the sun is nice! Hope it carries on like this now... x
